Shortbread on the Bike Path

Earlier this month (August 2006), I was invited to be the "Featured Business on the Bike Path" by Amy Kirshner of The Burlington Currency Project. I sit on the Board of Directors for this wonderful organization and am blown away by the energy, brains, power, and commitment I see at the meetings. Their new office is located in a prime spot between two creamee stands (Vermontism for "soft ice cream"), right on the waterfront path that receives plenty of foot and bicycle traffic.

We checked the weather forecast, chose a sunny Saturday, and then showed up bright and early to set up the shortbread table with free shortie samples, business cards and even my laptop in case passerbys felt compelled to order shortbread on the spot!

Burlington Currency Project members show local pride by using "Burlington Bread" to barter local products and services. Vermont Shortbread Company encourages fellow BCP members to purchase their 'bread with Bread, which is actually colorful "slices" of currency on leathery paper made from recycled blue jeans. BCP organizer Amy Kirshner, an AmeriCorps/VISTA volunteer, notes that spending Bread at one of the 60 or so Vermont businesses that accept it is the ultimate way to buy local. That's because all the money will recirculate here, rather than out of state. "It's an action, as opposed to a slogan," she says.

Here are a few photos we took in honor of the first-ever Burlington Currency member (me!) to be showcased on the bike path. Thanks Amy, for this prime networking opportunity!

Pictured below we have Bernie the Gnome, the unofficial Burlington Currency Project mascot. He adores shortbread and he is short, so he was well-suited for the task of helping attract future shortbread customers on the bike path.

Here's a rear view of some satisfied shortbread samplers after stopping by the Vermont Shortbread Company table to try a nibble of our famous shortbread. Notice their slow and reluctant pace. It's almost as if they're saying, "I don't want to go... I want to eat more shortbread!"
