Vermont
Shortbread and the Burlington Currency Project:
'Bread for Bread!
Burlington Currency Project members show
local pride by using "Burlington Bread"
to barter local products and services. Vermont
Shortbread Company encourages fellow BCP
members to purchase their 'bread with Bread,
which is actually colorful "slices"
of currency on leathery paper made from
recycled blue jeans. BCP organizer Amy Kirshner,
an AmeriCorps/VISTA volunteer, notes that
spending Bread at one of the 60 or so Vermont
businesses that accept it is the ultimate
way to buy local. That's because all the
money will recirculate here, rather than
out of state. "It's an action, as opposed
to a slogan," she says.
Here are a few photos
we took in honor of the first-ever Burlington
Currency member (me!) to be showcased on
the bike path. Thanks Amy, for this prime
networking opportunity!

Burlington's Official
Bike-Riding Feline. He was also featured
in our annual 4th of July parade, where
he proudly sported a little leather aviator's
helmet. His owner said, "He thinks
all cats ride bikes like he does."
